Since it opened in 1974, ships passing underneath the Tsing Yi Bridge, in Hong Kong, have collided with it several times, causing minor damage. Protection islands have been built in the channel to avoid further accidents. Signs warn that only ships under 17 metres are allowed to sail through the channel. Ships are prohibited from staying or operating in the vicinity.
