HTTPS vs HTTP Today we upgraded our site to https (as opposed to the less secure http). There are a few good reasons why we did this. Firstly, our site collects usernames, email addresses and passwords (as well as other optional details) and so encryption is more secure. Secondly, browsers like Google Chrome place a warning in the address bar when a site does not use https saying that the site might not be secure. By all accounts, not using https adversely affects prominence in Google Search results. That is why we have made the change. Please update all your links to us using https instead of http. In general, visitors to our site will not notice any changes except the browser address bar now has a little padlock next to all our page addresses indicating that the connection is secure. If you should encounter any issues, please let me know. Thanks.

Our October outward hit traffic has already surpassed any other month for the past year - beating last November's figure of 16,343. Back in April 2020, as the coronavirus pandemic took hold, the monthly figure was a mere 696 - which is perfectly understandable. But the world needs humour to help it cope with the many challenges we face today. Perhaps the recent increase in our site's popularity reflects a widespread realisation of this need - along with a feeling of optimism that our lives may have already started to recover.

Our HumorKids experiment is alive and well. We have constructed a special version of HumorLinks just for children which should be safe for them to use and free from any non child-friendly links. We have brought back our famous "toothpaste tube" logo, which has been loved by many for so many years. The idea behind it is that (rather like brushing your teeth) humor is something you need at the start of each and every day. And it's always a good idea to brush up on a few jokes for the sake of your dental... I mean mental... health.

A further improvement in the category listings. Categories now directly list all sites which are anywhere within their sub-category chains. For example, the category Jokes and Joking now directly lists all sites which are listed in every child-category, grandchild-category etc. within it. This means that any site, no matter what category it is listed under, will also be seen in all that category's parent-category, grandparent-category etc.. It will make it less likely that a site will be overlooked.

Our rating system has been revised. As before, all newly-listed sites are given an initial default rating of 8.0000 (on a scale from 5 to 10) and each visitor should vote for each site once only. But now, after a vote is cast, the updated rating score is calculated as being the average of the past 45 votes. This figure of 45 is used because that is the average number of votes each site is currently receiving. The revised system is more responsive than before when a figure of 300 average votes was used. It should provide a better way of assessing a site's quality.

A major change today in the category listings, although most people probably wouldn't notice it. All categories now also list the sites in their immediate sub-categories. For example, the category "Jokes and Joking" now also contains all sites listed under its sub-category "One Liners." This means that all sites, no matter what category they are listed under, may also be seen in that category's parent category. It will make it less likely that a site will be missed by visitors looking for something under a general heading.

It is now once more possible to vote for sites without signing up or logging in. To prevent abuse, the voting page is guarded by Google's reCaptcha. There are other safeguards in place to make sure that voting is fair. Users felt that signing in was too much of a hassle, especially when voting via other sites. Please let me know if there are any problems.

We have added new features to the listings. Each image now has an audience classification label in the bottom right corner, either U, PG 12 or PG 15. The hits graph now had a circular Volume indicator which shows the share of hits a site is getting when compared to the best performing site in the directory. In the example shown we can see that CheapHumor.com has a U label meaning that it is suitable for the whole family. Over the past year it has received a maximum of 110 hits per month. The circle shows a hit volume of 44%, which means its hit rate is currently running at 44% of what it could expect if it was HumorLinks' best performing site.
