China's four-year countdown on the resumption of sovereignty over Hong Kong gets well and truly under way.

 

It's a red letter day for paramount leader Deng Xiao-ping, here seen emptying his spittoon in readiness for the big event.

 

Further south, governor Chris Patten is putting his house in order - with anti-aircraft installations, camouflage paint and land mines - but still finds time to tend the azaleas. Looks like a deal of hard work. But don't throw the towel in yet, Chris, there's still plenty to be done on the home front.

 

Dark clouds may loom on the horizon. But while the Union Jack still flies it's still very much a question of Land of Hope and Glory, There'll Always Be an England, and . . . don't forget the fruit gums mum!
